Major Course Products
The two major course projects described below were designed with a particular gifted student or group of students in mind. Each project reflects differentiation of content, process and product to more effectively meet the needs of the targeted gifted students. A short synopsis of each project is included below and each may be viewed in its entirety by following the link from its title.
Individualized Scope and Sequence
An individualized scope and sequence for an Algebra II high school course (two semesters) was developed for a particular gifted student based on his assessed needs, interests and characteristics. The scope and sequence includes over-arching goals as well as content objectives. A sampling of objectives is listed below:
- Graphs and identifies ordered pairs in the coordinate plane and relates it to locating one's position on a map.
- Distinguishes the different characteristics (slope, intercepts, equations) of a horizontal line, a vertical line and a line that's neither.
- Compares and contrasts the different forms of equations for a line; writes and graphs equations of lines given various information (such as slope, intercepts, points on the line).
Differentiated Curriculum Unit
Based on several content objectives from the individualized scope and sequence above, a differentiated curriculum unit was designed for a small group of gifted high school students. The unit consists of 15 lessons that focus on linear relationships. Five of the lessons are internet based and provide in-depth instructions for the student and the teacher. The remaining ten lessons in the unit are more briefly described and are not web-based.
